Vaiśampāyana said: O king! Bhāradvāja's powerful son went to Pṛṣata's son and said, "Recognize me."
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे राजा! भारद्वाज का शक्तिशाली पुत्र पृषत के पुत्र के पास गया और बोला, "मुझे पहचानो।"
Drupada replied: "O Brāhmaṇa! Your wisdom is lacking and inferior, if you suddenly begin to address me as your friend.

O one with a dull mind! No great king can ever be a friend with men like you. You have no prosperity, nor do you have riches.
हे मंदबुद्धि! कोई भी महान राजा तुम जैसे मनुष्यों का कभी मित्र नहीं बन सकता। तुम्हारे पास न तो समृद्धि है, न धन-दौलत।
Time decays everything, including friendship. It is true that we were friends once, but that was based on a relationship of equality.
समय मित्रता सहित सब कुछ नष्ट कर देता है। यह सच है कि हम एक समय दोस्त थे, लेकिन वह समानता के रिश्ते पर आधारित था।
No friendship can be found in the world that does not age; desire and anger both destroy it. Do not therefore talk about a friendship that has died out.
दुनिया में ऐसी कोई दोस्ती नहीं मिलती जो पुरानी न हो; काम और क्रोध दोनों ही उसे नष्ट कर देते हैं। इसलिए उस मित्रता के बारे में बात न करें जो ख़त्म हो गई है।
O best of Brāhmana-s! Find a fresh friendship. I was friends with you because it served my purpose.
हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ! एक ताज़ा दोस्ती खोजें. मैं आपसे मित्रता करता था क्योंकि इससे मेरा उद्देश्य पूरा होता था।

The poor cannot be a friend to the rich. The fool cannot be a friend to the learned. The weak cannot a friend of the strong. Who wants an old friendship?
गरीब अमीर का मित्र नहीं हो सकता। मूर्ख विद्वान का मित्र नहीं हो सकता। निर्बल बलवान का मित्र नहीं हो सकता। पुरानी दोस्ती कौन चाहता है?
Those of similar wealth and similar lineage can have marriages and friendship together, not one who is rich with one who is poor. One who is learned in the Veda-s cannot be a friend to one who is not learned.
समान धन और समान वंश वाले लोग एक साथ विवाह और मित्रता कर सकते हैं, न कि जो व्यक्ति अमीर है उसके साथ जो गरीब है। जो वेदों का विद्वान है, वह उस व्यक्ति का मित्र नहीं हो सकता, जो विद्वान नहीं है।
One with chariots cannot be a friend to one who has no chariots. A king cannot be a friend to one who is not a king. Who wants this old friendship?"

Vaiśampāyana said: Thus addressed by Drupada, Bhāradvāja's powerful son was full of wrath and reflected for a while.

One day, all the Kuru princes came out of Gajasahrya together. The brave ones wandered around, playing with a wooden ball.

While they were playing, the ball fell into a well. With all their efforts, they couldn't find a way to recover the ball.
जब वे खेल रहे थे तो गेंद एक कुएँ में गिर गयी। अपने सभी प्रयासों के बावजूद, वे गेंद को ठीक करने का कोई रास्ता नहीं खोज सके।
The valorous Droṇa saw that the princes were unsuccessful in their attempts. He laughed at them a little and then softly told them,

"Shame on your Kṣatriya prowess! Shame on your knowledge of weapons! You have been born in the Bhārata lineage and yet you cannot recover a ball.
"तुम्हारे क्षत्रिय कौशल को शर्म आनी चाहिए! तुम्हारे हथियारों के ज्ञान को लानत है! तुम भरत वंश में पैदा हुए हो और फिर भी एक गेंद भी हासिल नहीं कर सकते।
Here is a handful of reeds that I have invested with the mantra of my weapons. Look at their power, unmatched by that of anything else.
यहां कुछ मुट्ठी भर सरकंडे हैं जिन्हें मैंने अपने हथियारों के मंत्र के साथ निवेश किया है। उनकी शक्ति को देखो, किसी भी अन्य चीज़ से बेजोड़।
I will pierce the ball with one of these reeds and that reed with another one and that one with another. With the chain of reeds, I will bring the ball up into my hands."

On seeing this, the eyes of the princes widened with wonder. They saw him pull up the ball and spoke to the one who had pulled the ball up.
यह देखकर राजकुमारों की आंखें आश्चर्य से फैल गईं। उन्होंने उसे गेंद को ऊपर खींचते हुए देखा और उससे बात की जिसने गेंद को ऊपर खींचा था।
"O Brāhmaṇa! We pay homage to you. No one else has the knowledge to do that. Who are you? We wish to know your lineage. What can we do for you?"
"हे ब्राह्मण! हम आपको प्रणाम करते हैं। ऐसा करने का ज्ञान किसी और के पास नहीं है। आप कौन हैं? हम आपका वंश जानना चाहते हैं। हम आपके लिए क्या कर सकते हैं?"

द्रोण उवाच आचक्षध्वं च भीष्माय रूपेण च गुणैश्च माम् स एव सुमहाबुद्धिः सांप्रतं प्रतिपत्स्यते
Droṇa replied: "Go to Bhīṣma and tell him of my appearance and qualities. He has great intelligence and will know what should be done."
द्रोण ने उत्तर दिया: "भीष्म के पास जाओ और उन्हें मेरे रूप और गुणों के बारे में बताओ। उनके पास महान बुद्धि है और वह जानते होंगे कि क्या करना चाहिए।"
Vaiśampāyana said: The princes agreed. They went to Bhīṣma, the grandfather, and told him exactly what the Brāhmaṇa had said and done.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: राजकुमार सहमत हो गए। वे पितामह भीष्म के पास गए और उन्हें वही बताया जो ब्राह्मण ने कहा और किया था।

भीष्मः श्रुत्वा कुमाराणां द्रोणं तं प्रत्यजानत युक्तरूपः स हि गुरुरित्येवमनुचिन्त्य च
On hearing this from the princes, Bhīṣma immediately recognized Droṇa. He thought that this would be the right preceptor.
राजकुमारों से यह सुनकर भीष्म ने तुरंत द्रोण को पहचान लिया। उसने सोचा कि यही सही गुरु होगा।
He went to him in person and paid him the highest of respects. Bhīṣma, the greatest of those who wielded arms, then skilfully asked Droṇa about the reason why he had come there and he told him the entire reason.
वह व्यक्तिगत रूप से उनके पास गये और उन्हें सर्वोच्च सम्मान दिया। तब शस्त्रधारियों में श्रेष्ठ भीष्म ने कुशलतापूर्वक द्रोण से उनके वहाँ आने का कारण पूछा और उन्होंने उन्हें सारा कारण बता दिया।
Droṇa said, "Desiring to learn the science of Dhanur Veda, I earlier went to maharṣi Āgniveśya.
द्रोण ने कहा, "धनुरवेद का विज्ञान सीखने की इच्छा से, मैं पहले महर्षि अग्निवेश्य के पास गया था।
I lived there for a long time, as a humble brahmachari with matted hair, desiring to learn Dhanur Veda.
मैं धनुर्वेद सीखने की इच्छा से, उलझे बालों वाले एक विनम्र ब्रह्मचारी के रूप में लंबे समय तक वहां रहा।
The powerful Yajñasena, son of the king of Pāñcāla, hardworking and dedicated, also studied with me under that teacher.
पंचाल के राजा का शक्तिशाली पुत्र, मेहनती और समर्पित यज्ञसेन भी मेरे साथ उस शिक्षक के अधीन अध्ययन करता था।

There he became my friend and was always willing to do what brought me happiness. I also loved his company. O descendant of the Kuru lineage! We studied together from the time we were boys.
वहां वह मेरा दोस्त बन गया और हमेशा वह काम करने को तैयार रहता था जिससे मुझे खुशी मिलती हो। मुझे भी उसका साथ बहुत अच्छा लगता था. हे कुरु वंश के वंशज! हम बचपन से ही एक साथ पढ़ते थे।
He would come to me and do things that were pleasurable for me. O Bhīṣma! He used to say things that brought me pleasure:

This is the way he spoke to me then. Having become skilled in use of weapons, I set out in search of riches. When I heard that he had been instated, I remembered those words.
तब उन्होंने मुझसे इसी तरह बात की थी.' अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में कुशल होकर मैं धन की खोज में निकल पड़ा। जब मैंने सुना कि उसे उकसाया गया है, तो मुझे वे शब्द याद आ गये।
Happily, I went to see my old friend in his kingdom. O lord! Remembering those words,
ख़ुशी से, मैं अपने पुराने दोस्त से मिलने उसके राज्य में गया। हे भगवान! उन शब्दों को याद करते हुए,
Then, O lord, having approached Drupada, I said to my former friend, "O tiger among men, know me as your friend."
तब, हे प्रभु, मैंने द्रुपद के पास जाकर अपने पूर्व मित्र से कहा, "हे मनुष्यों में सिंह, मुझे अपना मित्र जान लो।"
But Drupada, having approached his friend laughed at me as if I were unimportant. He said,
परन्तु द्रुपद अपने मित्र के पास आकर मुझ पर ऐसे हँसे मानो मैं महत्वहीन हूँ। उसने कहा,
"O Brāhmaṇa! Your wisdom is lacking and inferior. O Brāhmaṇa! Why have you suddenly come to me, claiming to be my friend?
"हे ब्राह्मण! आपकी बुद्धि अल्प और घटिया है। हे ब्राह्मण! आप मेरे मित्र होने का दावा करते हुए अचानक मेरे पास क्यों आये हैं?

हे भीष्म! द्रुपद के शब्दों से मैं क्रोध से भर गया और सही गुणों वाले शिष्यों की तलाश में कुरु-देश की ओर चल पड़ा।
Bhīṣma and Pāṇḍu's sons accepted him as a preceptor. O king! With all kinds of riches,
भीष्म और पांडु के पुत्रों ने उन्हें गुरु के रूप में स्वीकार किया। हे राजा! सभी प्रकार की समृद्धि के साथ,

he handed over his grandsons as disciples to Droṇa, in accordance with the prescribed manner.

O lord! When they heard him, the Kaurava-s remained silent. But Arjuna, the scorcher of enemies, gave him a complete promise
हे भगवान! जब उन्होंने उसकी बात सुनी तो कौरव चुप रहे। परन्तु शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले अर्जुन ने उसे पूर्ण वचन दे दिया

ततोऽर्जुनं मूर्ध्नि तदा समाघ्राय पुनः पुनः प्रीतिपूर्वं परिष्वज्य प्ररुरोद मुदा तदा
and he then inhaled the scent of Arjuna's forehead repeatedly, embracing him delightedly and shedding tears of joy.
और फिर उन्होंने अर्जुन के माथे की गंध को बार-बार सूंघा, खुशी से उसे गले लगाया और खुशी के आंसू बहाए।

ततो द्रोणः पाण्डुपुत्रानस्त्राणि विविधानि च ग्राहयामास दिव्यानि मानुषाणि च वीर्यवान्
Then the valorous Droṇa taught Pāṇḍu's sons the use of many weapons, human and divine.
तब वीर द्रोण ने पाण्डु पुत्रों को अनेक मानवीय एवं दिव्य अस्त्र-शस्त्रों का प्रयोग सिखाया।
O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Other princes also came to Droṇa, supreme among Brāhmana-s, to learn the use of arms — the Vṛṣṇi-s, the Andhaka-s, kings from many countries,
हे भरत वंश में बैल! अन्य राजकुमार भी, ब्राह्मणों में सर्वोच्च, द्रोण के पास हथियारों का उपयोग सीखने के लिए आए - वृष्णि, अंधक, कई देशों के राजा,
and Rādheya, the son of the sūta. They made Droṇa their preceptor. The sūta's son was envious of Pārtha and always competed with him. With Duryodhana's support, he showed his contempt for the Pāṇḍava-s.
और सूत के पुत्र राधेय। उन्होंने द्रोण को अपना गुरु बनाया। सूतपुत्र पार्थ से ईर्ष्या करता था और सदैव उससे प्रतिस्पर्धा करता था। दुर्योधन के समर्थन से, उसने पांडवों के प्रति अपना तिरस्कार दिखाया।
